The republic of Uzbekistan forms the very the center of Central Asia, between the Amudarya and Sirdarya rivers. It borders on all five Central Asian republics – Kazakhstan to the north and north-west, Turkmenistan to the south-west, Kyrgyzstan to the north-east, Tajikistan to the south-east and Afghanistan to the south.
The territory of Uzbekistan is 448, 9 square kilometers.
The length of the territory from the north to the south is 930 kilometers and from the west to the east is more than 1500 kilometers.
The total length of the State borders is 6221 kilometers.
To the north, between the Amudarya and Sirdaya rivers, lies the Kizilkum desert, occupying more than 300.000 square kilometers. Mountains and foothills make up 1/5 of the country’s territory. Western Tyan-shan and Pamir-Alay mountain ranges are situated within the territory of Uzbekistan. The highest peak is 4643 m above sea level.
Uzbekistan belongs to high seismic zone, but major earthquakes are very rare. According to the scientists, they can happen once a century.
The republic of Uzbekistan consists of an autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan,
12 provinces, 163 districts, 120 towns.
The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent, with more than 2, 5 million people.
